Udaya Gamachchi

Udaya is largely a self taught artist, who has a real passion for expressing the colour, energy and vibrant world he sees around him. He works mainly with water colours, and says that he finds painting to be his most rewarding activity on any given day. Otherwise fairly laid back, he becomes quite intense, and driven when he starts talking about his work. I could feel the spell it cast over him as he talked about how he would find inspiration in the simplest things. Above all, he seemed uncritical, and entirely open. He would paint whatever he felt like, and was insistent that he would try any style and be open to any ideas.

Udaya lives just outside the main area of Colombo, in Gampaha along the Kandy – Colombo road. Though he’d love to be a full time artist, he has a busy life juggling his freelance work in film and TV, with the responsibilities of being a father to an energetic 17 daughter who’s a keen cricketer. As so many of us do, he’s always on the move, taking her to games, watching and supporting her along the way!
